May 1 All Day Teach-In!

“In much of the world, May 1 — International Workers’ Day — is recognized as a public holiday — won through generations of struggle and marked by marches, strikes, and mass demonstrations. The holiday traces back to 1886, when hundreds of thousands of workers across the United States launched a coordinated movement to reduce working hours from grueling 10–16 hour days to an eight-hour workday. On May 1, workers walked off the job in cities across the country, making one of the largest strikes in U.S. history.” –Zinn Education Project, Teaching the Truth About May Day: Reclaiming Labor’s Global Holiday

Even though in the US the Labor Day holiday is officially in September, May 1 is recognized internationally in commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Riot in Chicago, which led to the arrest, trial without evidence, and execution of several leaders. Around the world, people are gathering on May Day at marches, going on strike, and participating in mass demonstrations in a show of solidarity for workers everywhere and as a call for justice and dignity for everyone.

In the US, people are joining calls for an economic boycott and a general strike and will demonstrate in public actions to demand political change that will provide better work and living conditions for everyday and working people. Alongside those May Day actions, PHM-USA is bringing together people who are working to make change in their communities. They’ll share insights, strategies, and lessons learned from their efforts to make meaningful change.
